The St. John Fisher College men’s basketball program enjoyed two of its greatest seasons in the early 1970s, thanks largely in part to the play of Steve Fitzgerald.  A captain in his final two seasons, Fitzgerald paced the Cardinals to a 36-5 overall record in his junior and senior campaigns, while leading his team in assists both years.  After averaging 22 points on the freshman team, Fitzgerald earned the starting point guard spot as a sophomore, but missed most of the season with an injury. In his junior year, Fitzgerald set the Fisher single-game scoring record with 33 points and ranked 11th nationally in free throw shooting, as the Cardinals posted a College-record 19-2 mark.  As a senior, Fitzgerald averaged 13 points and paced the Cardinals to a 17-3 record, including a one-point win over Geneseo, a game in which he made a 22-footer in the closing moments to push Fisher’s home winning streak to 25 games. Following graduation, Fitzgerald helped coach the JV and varsity teams at Fisher and was a youth soccer coach for over 12 years. Steve, who graduated from Fisher in 1972 with a degree in history, was a special education teacher in the BOCES system for over 36 years, and lived in Fairport with his wife, Mary Pat. They have two daughters, Kelly and Alison.
