Carl Wenzel finished his varsity career with 712 points, averaging 11.5 points per game and shooting a respectable 51.5% from the floor.
“It’s not about individual performances, it’s about an individual’s contribution to the overall team effort,” said former Fisher coach and Basketball Hall of Fame member Bobby Wanzer in the winter of 1974. “But Carl Wenzel is almost a perfect contributor.”
Game in and game out, Wenzel was Fisher’s floor general, slowing down the game and running the team’s offense, while guarding the opposition’s top player on the defensive end.
While Wenzel was given this daunting responsibility, he rarely came out of the game, often playing the entire 40 minutes.
Over his four-years at St. John Fisher College, the Cardinals compiled an overall record of 65 wins and just 19 losses.
Wenzel was named to the Lincoln-Chase All-Tournament Team in his junior year and as a senior, the 6-foot-1 guard led the Cardinals to their first Lincoln Tournament title, while leading his team in assists and averaging nearly 15 points per game.
Wenzel graduated with a degree in management and currently teaches Business Education at Geneva High School, where he was the boy’s basketball coach for 21 years.
