At the time of his induction, Gary Mervis served as a volunteer assistant coach for the St. John Fisher College football team for the better part of 20 years. Working with Fisher’s kickers and punters, Mervis was instrumental in the development of many players. Although his contributions on the football field are many, his greatest gifts were given away from the gridiron. As the founder and chairman of Camp Good Days and Special Times, Mervis touched the lives of a countless number of families affected by cancer and other life challenges. Camp Good Days and Special Times has sponsored the “Teddi Dance,” named in honor of Mervis’ daughter, which has become a fundraising tradition over the course of its generous history. In addition to his efforts with Camp Good Days, Mervis was the co-founder and sponsor of the Fisher Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and was the driving force behind the formation of the “Courage Bowl,” the annual football game between Fisher and the University of Rochester, which began in the fall of 2005. Over the course of his life, Gary Mervis demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of others, both on the football field, and in the lives of those who have been affected by devastating life challenges, including cancer. Gary received an honorary doctor of laws degree from Fisher in 2005.
