PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Postseason competition begins for the St. John Fisher men's and women's track and field teams with the Empire 8 Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at Nazareth University's Golisano Training Center.
Four Things To Watch
Penna, Kaplan Look To Keep Climbing Nationally (Men's Track and Field)
Junior pole vaulter Hayden Penna and senior thrower Brandon Kaplan will look to keep climbing up their respective national performance lists.
Penna bested his school record in the pole vault for the fourth time this season last Friday in the Nazareth Conference Tune Up. He placed second at 5.02 meters, the seventh-best mark in Division III this season. It marked his second record-breaking performance in the last month, as he previously outdid his program-best mark back on Jan. 31 in the Cornell Southern Tier Open.
Kaplan broke his school record in the weight throw in the RIT Invitational last month with a toss of 18.82 meters, the 14th-best mark nationally. He has recorded four throws that have traveled more than 18 meters in the last month.
Both athletes placed first in their respective events in the E8 Indoor Championships last year.
Biller and Stuart Gaining Momentum (Men's Track and Field)
Sophomore sprinter/hurdler Trystan Biller and junior distance runner Jace Stuart have stacked strong performances over the last few weeks.
Biller won the 60-meter hurdles event with a time of 8.33, the third-best mark in program history in the event, last Friday in the Nazareth Conference Tune-Up last Friday. He matched Fisher's fourth-fastest time in the 60-meter run (7.08 seconds) in the Boston University meet on Feb. 15.
Stuart set a school record and placed first in the 3,000-meter run last Friday with a time of 8:40.33. He set a personal record in the mile in the Boston University meet with a time of 4:16.62.
Keough, Dorunda Headline Strong Group Of Women's Track and Field Freshmen, Sophomores (Women's Track and Field)
Of the 30 Fisher women's track and field student-athletes set to compete in the E8 indoor championships, 19 of them are either freshmen or sophomores.
Freshman Makenna Keough (jumps) and sophomore Abigail Dorunda (sprints) headline that group.
Keough set a school record in the triple jump last Friday in the Nazareth Conference Tune-Up with a mark of 11.33 meters. She recorded the fourth-best 60-meter hurdles time (9.46s) in program history in the Ithaca meet and the fifth-best long jump mark (5.34m) in program history in the Utica Invite earlier this month.
Dorunda cracked Fisher's indoor top five lists in the 60-meter run, the 200-meter run, the 300-meter run and the 400-meter run during the regular season. Her 25.60 time in the 200-meter run, recorded in the Boston University meet on Feb. 14, was a tenth of a second shy of Zhane Lettsome's school record (25.59).
Freshman Emily Heiner (sprints) logged Fisher's fourth-best 60-meter time (7.88) in the Ithaca meet and its fifth-best 200-meter time (25.94) in the Boston University meet.
Sophomore Kianna Naval (jumps) holds Fisher's third-best triple jump mark (10.95m), while Kathryn Hillyard (pole vault/jumps) still holds Fisher's indoor pole vault record (3.47m), which she set last indoor season as a freshman.
McGuinness, Voloshen Hoping To Build On Recent Strong Performances (Women's Track and Field)
Seniors Erin McGuinness (throws) and Caitlin Voloshen (distance) will be looking to build on their performances from last week.
McGuinness placed second in the shot put last week in the Nazareth meet with a throw of 12.52 meters, just shy of her personal record of 12.60. Voloshen nearly beat her program record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.35.
McGuinness took first place in the shot put in the E8 indoor Championships last season.
