The St. John Fisher College cross country teams opened the 2012 season at the Daniel Walker Invitational, with both the men's and the women's side placing seventh in their respective meets. The men recorded 227 points against eight other opposing teams, while the women totaled 184 to place seventh in a field of 10 teams.
The men were led by sophomore
Matt Herbert, who posted a time of 29:22 in the 8k race. Herbert placed 56th of 112 runners. Fisher's freshmen also had a strong showing in their first collegiate outing, as Jeffrey Mangiafesto finished 66th with a time of 30:05 and
Sam Harbol finished 80th (31:09).
Evan Magnussen came in at a time of 30:13 for 68th place, while
Jose Ramos was just behind him at a time of 30:45 for 76th place.
Freshman
Katlin Shippy was the top runner for the women's squad, as she ran the 5k course in 20:45. Shippy finished 27th out of 133 runners. Classmates
Renee Deruchia,
Nicole Vainauskas and
Sarah Harrington also had strong performances as they posted times of 20:55, 21:33 and 21:52, respectively, for 31st, 48th and 57th place.
Second-year runner
Taylor Gallup came across the finish line at 21:27 for 43th place, while classmate
Amanda Westfall finished in 74th with a time of 22:30.
The Cardinals will run again on September 8th, when they travel to Houghton College for the Houghton Short Course Invitational. The meet was the opener for Fisher last season, with the men earning the top spot and the women finishing third.
