Mike Guinta (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) of the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College football team has been selected as the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending December 1, 2013.

Guinta continued his stellar play on defense in a 27-6 win over previously-unbeaten Hobart College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship.

The senior defensive back intercepted a Patrick Conlan pass in the third quarter and returned it 22 yards.  On the very next play Tyler Fenti connected with Kevin Francis for a 32-yard touchdown to give the Cardinals a 24-0 lead.

Guinta’s interception was his sixth in the last seven games and seventh overall, tying the Fisher single-season record.

The Fisher defense held Hobart to its lowest point total of the season, while forcing three turnovers in the game.

Guinta also had five tackles on the day.

With the win Fisher improves to 10-2 overall, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals against Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) for a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday in Belton, Texas.
