UTICA, N.Y. – Two St. John Fisher men's track and field athletes took first in their events in the first portion of the Empire 8 Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at Utica University's Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center.
The Cardinals stand in third as a team with 39.5 team points. SUNY Geneseo leads the way with 97.5 points, and Brockport stands in second at 62.5 points.
Sophomores Manuel Sepulveda and Hayden Penna claimed Empire 8 championships in their respective competitions. Sepulveda placed first and set a collegiate best in the long jump (7.19m), while Penna placed first in the pole vault (4.60m).
Penna has won the E8 Indoor Track and Field pole vault championship two years in a row.
With his performance, Sepulveda moved up to No. 14 in Division III in the long jump.
Other Meet Highlights

St. John Fisher's distance medley relay team of Jamie Schappi, Robert Hartigan, Nathan Canale and Nathaniel Kulp placed third (10:35.69). The group met the NCAA Regional qualification mark and cracked No. 4 on the program's top-five list in the event.

Freshman Oren Welch placed fourth in the pole vault (4.45m) and qualified for the 60m hurdles final. He placed eighth in the 60mh at 8.91 seconds.

Christopher Lopez qualified for the 60m run final, recording a sixth-place finish at 7.11 seconds.

Junior Joey Curr placed fourth in the shot put (14.73m), and freshman Daniel Davis set a personal record in the event (14.61m).
