BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – St. John Fisher men's track and field senior thrower Brandon Kaplan and junior pole vaulter Hayden Penna achieved All-America status on Friday during the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Kaplan finished as a second-team All-American in the weight throw, while Penna earned the same distinction in the pole vault, making them the first All-Americans in program history in those events. The top eight finishers in each event at nationals earn first-team All-America honors, while those who place ninth through 16th receive second-team recognition.
Competing in the indoor national meet for the first time—after qualifying for outdoor nationals last year—Kaplan placed 13th in the weight throw with a heave of 17.97 meters. Penna, making his nationals debut, finished 16th in the pole vault with a mark of 4.83 meters.
Kaplan and Penna both broke their own program records multiple times this indoor season. Kaplan most recently did so with a throw of 19.16 meters at the E8 Indoor Championships on Feb. 28, while Penna raised his pole vault record to 5.02 meters at the Nazareth Conference Tune-Up on Feb. 20.
