CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior
Makenna King made history on Thursday at the AARTFC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, winning the regional discus throw title in Cortland.
King's 49.26m/161'7'' throw beat her previous program record by over 4 meters and was the fourth-best in all of Division III this season, ensuring a trip to the National Championships next week in Myrtle Beach. The record-setting throw came on her sixth and final attempt, rocketing her from third place into first.
In other field events, King also put together a top-eight performance in the shot put, finishing sixth with a mark of 12.93m/42'5.25''. Sophomore teammate Erin McGuiness placed 14th with a distance of 11.68m/38'4'', while also taking 12th in the discus throw with a toss of 38.74m/127'1''.
In track events, freshman
Sophia Leach placed 18th in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:09.39. Sophomore
Caitlin Voloshen placed 21st in the 800m, ending with a time of 2:21.77. In relays, the 4x800 team of
Olivia Grinnell,
Allison List,
Maggie Bacon, and Voloshen placed 10th, crossing the finish line in 9:51.57.
The Cardinals finished the team competition with 21 points, tying for 13th.
The NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Champions run from May 23-25 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
