HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's track and field team competed on day one of the Empire 8 Indoor Championships at Houghton University on Friday.
After the end of the first day of competition, the Cardinals are in third with 51 points, behind Nazareth (89) and Utica (57).
Track Events
Sophomore Caitlin Voloshen won the Empire 8 indoor title in the mile run, outracing her opponents to a time of 5:22.36. Voloshen is the second-ever Cardinal to win an indoor women's championship at the distance and the first since Gabriella Dunkelberg won in 2020.
Voloshen, alongside freshmen Grace Dolan, Allison List, and Maggie Bacon, also won the distance medley in an Atlantic Region qualifying time of 12:59.65.
Fisher took four of the top six spots in the 5000 meter, with senior Lauren DeMichele placing second with a time of 18:55.03 and junior Riley Jameson placing third by finishing in 19:03.28. Senior Laura Witt (19:25.61) and senior Lauren Almy (19:42.89) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
Freshman Grace Dolan earned the team points in her first-ever Empire 8 indoor finals, placing fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.39.
Field Event
Senior Makenna King and sophomore Erin McGuiness finished fourth and fifth in the shot put with distances of 12.55m/41'2.25'' and 11.73m/38'6'', respectively.
Junior Emily Frech earned a fourth-place finish in the pole vault with a height of 3m/9'10''.
Senior Michaela Kurbs placed sixth in the long jump with a distance of 5.26m/17'3.25''.
Pentathlon
The Cardinals had two athletes competing in the indoor pentathlon: freshman Mary Rollins and junior Logan Frederickson. Rollins finished seventh in the multi-sport event with 2527 points- her best individual discipline was the high jump, where she finished second with a height of 1.48m. Fredrickson placed ninth, including a fourth-place spot in the shot put with a throw of 9.47m.
