PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team continues early season non-conference play this week with a home match against SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday before a Saturday trip to RIT to face the Tigers.
Both games are set for 7 p.m. starts and will be important tests for the Cardinals as they prepare for the start of conference play later in the month.
The Cardinals enter the week with a 0-3-1 record, losing their home opener last Wednesday to Brockport in a close 3-2 match before notching a scoreless draw at Oswego State.
Two In Net: Graduate student
Christian Burkhart and senior
Jadon Schlierf have split goalkeeping duties so far this season, each starting two matches each and splitting time in the season-opener against Elizabethtown. Burkhart is tops in the Empire 8 with 5.33 saves per game, while Schlierf held a clean sheet last week in the draw with Oswego State.
When Last We Met: Both of the Cardinals' opponents this week are familiar regional opponents and represent the past and future of Fisher's conference rivalries. RIT was a member of the Empire 8 until 2011, while Geneseo will join the conference beginning next season.
The Cardinals are 6-10-2 against Geneseo since 2005 and last faced off on Sept. 3 last year. The Knights won that one, 1-0, in Geneseo. The last Fisher win against Geneseo was a year before, on Sept. 1, 2021, when the Cardinals won 2-1 at home to open the season.
St. John Fisher last faced RIT in 2018, when they dropped a 3-0 matchup at RIT's campus. The Cardinals are 2-8 against the Tigers since 2005.
Player To Watch: Junior
Jacob McGinnis usually plays defense or midfield, but he showed his offensive chops last week with a goal against Brockport. It was the first collegiate goal for the Brighton graduate, who has started all four games this season so far.
