PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team is set to host two games at Growney Stadium this week, welcoming Empire 8 foes Alfred University and Utica University on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively. Both games start at 4:00 P.M. 
 
The 2-4-3 Cardinals are coming off a 1-0 win over Keuka College last Saturday. Senior Joey Avallone had the lone Fisher goal, scoring a header off a cross from sophomore Reese Powers. 
 
St. John Fisher is currently tied for third in the conference standings with Utica due to their identical 1-0-1 conference records. 
 
Defensive Dominance: The Cardinals have gone two straight matches without allowing a goal, playing a scoreless draw with Elmira on Sept. 23 before their 1-0 win against Keuka last Saturday. In fact, the Cardinals didn't allow a single shot on goal by the Wolves in Saturday's game! 
 
The last score against Fisher's defense came in their 2-1 loss to nationally-ranked University of Rochester on Sept. 19, when the Yellowjackets scored twice in the first half. 
 
Know Your Foes: As conference opponents from New York State, the Cardinals have a long history with both Alfred and Utica. 
 
Fisher is 10-8-1 against Alfred University since 2005, including a 7-3 record at home. Last year, however, the Cardinals fell on the road to the Saxons, 2-0. The defeat was the red-and-yellow's first defeat at the hands of Alfred since 2019. 
 
Against Utica, the Cardinals are 12-7-1 since 2005. The one tie, however, was a painful one for Fisher: it came in the Empire 8 semifinals last season, and Utica ultimately eliminated the Cardinals in a penalty kick shootout. Before that, Fisher won last season's regular season match-up, 2-0. 
 
Player To Watch: Senior goalkeeper Jadon Schlierf remains near the top of most conference leaderboards at the position, leading in save percentage (.862), second in goals-against-average (.624), and third in shutouts per game.
