PITTSFORD, N.Y. – After a week with two games against non-conference foes, the St. John Fisher University field hockey team gets back to Empire 8 competition this week, traveling to Elmira on Wednesday before hosting Hartwick on Saturday for Senior Day.
The Cardinals went 0-2 last week, falling to the University of Rochester, 3-1, on Wednesday before dropping a contest to Cortland in a rare Sunday matchup, 8-0. Fisher now stands at 6-7 on the season, including a 3-0 record in the Empire 8. They currently sit second in the conference standings, behind only Hartwick. The top five teams in the conference reach the Empire 8 tournament.
Wednesday's game at Elmira starts at 3:30 P.M., with Sunday's home game set to begin at 4:00 P.M.
Empire State of Mind: Barring a trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Cardinals will only face Empire 8 teams the rest of the schedule. That could be good news for Fisher, who have outscored Empire 8 opponents 15-3 so far this season.
Bird-Watching: The Cardinals are 10-1 all-time against the Elmira College Eagles, including a 9-0 victory last season. St. John Fisher hasn't lost to Elmira since Sept. 17, 2011- the first conference game in the history of Fisher's varsity field hockey program. Elmira enters the week 2-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Fisher is 10-3 all-time against the Hartwick Hawks, but lost last season's matchup, 7-2. Hartwick is 8-3 on the year so far and 4-0 in conference play.
Player To Watch: Freshman
Mary Kate McPhee leads Fisher underclassmen with nine points this season so far, including a goal in last week's game with the University of Rochester. The midfielder has started half of the 12 games she's played in this year, notching four goals and an assist in total.
