ALBANY, N.Y. –
Sydney Byrns and
Holly Stuart scored in the third quarter to break a 1-1 tie, and the St. John Fisher field hockey team held Russell Sage without a shot after halftime until the fourth quarter in a 3-1 Empire 8 win Saturday afternoon at UAlbany. The Cardinals improved to 6-8 overall and 3-3 in the Empire 8.
How it Happened
Fisher put 11 shots on the cage in the opening quarter and broke through with 41 seconds left. Off a penalty corner, Gator goalkeeper Olivia Brand stopped back-to-back looks from Makayla Vanderpool and Avery McLaughlin, but McLaughlin stayed with the play and finished off a Callie Smith feed for a 1-0 lead.
Russell Sage answered late in the second quarter. Brynn Bacak made a defensive save on a Gator corner, but Sadee Short scored unassisted with 2:30 left in the half to tie it at 1-1.
The Cardinals regained the lead less than two minutes into the third. After a Fisher corner, Brand turned away Mary Kate McPhee, and Byrns put home a feed from McPhee at the 1:59 mark for what stood as the game-winner. Stuart made it 3-1 with an unassisted goal with 5:10 left in the quarter. Russell Sage didn't record a shot in the third.
Fisher kept pushing in the fourth, firing 15 shots and earning eight penalty corners. McLaughlin hit the post midway through the quarter and Brand made six saves in the period to keep it a two-goal game. Bacak closed it out with her second defensive save of the day, stopping a Cheyanne Zobel shot off a corner at the final horn.
The Cardinals outshot Russell Sage 37-10, held a 20-5 edge in shots on goal, and earned 13 penalty corners to the Gators' five.
