Field Hockey Falls to Houghton in Overtime

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher field hockey team built a 2-0 lead, but Houghton came back and won 3-2 in overtime on Adria Hartzler's goal in an Empire 8 game Wednesday night at Growney Stadium. The Cardinals fell to 5-8 overall (2-3 Empire 8).

How it Happened

Fisher started fast. Houghton goalkeeper Amber Cribbs stopped Mary Kate McPhee and Makayla Vanderpool on an early penalty corner. Less than a minute later, McPhee finished a feed from Jordan Kauffman at 3:55 of the first quarter to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Fisher controlled the second quarter, outshooting Houghton 8-0 and earning four penalty corners. Cribbs made four saves in the period to keep the score 1-0 at halftime.

Maggie Gocella doubled the lead with an unassisted goal 7:19 into the third quarter. The Cardinals had a chance to go up 3-0 when they drew a penalty stroke, but Kauffman's attempt went wide. Houghton scored 51 seconds later, when Ashley Quinnett converted a feed from Kylee Barshinger to make it 2-1.

The Highlanders tied the game 2:29 into the fourth quarter. Ava Kramp scored off a penalty corner, with Olivia Ocker getting the assist. Cribbs denied Avery McLaughlin with just over a minute left in regulation, sending the game to overtime. Cribbs also stopped Vanderpool less than a minute into the extra period. Morgan Parrinello turned away a Hartzler shot with under a minute to play in overtime, but Hartzler scored 43 seconds later to win it.
