Brockport Beats Field Hockey 2-1

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Maggie Gocella gave the St. John Fisher field hockey team an early lead, but Brockport answered with two goals in the second quarter to earn a 2-1 Empire 8 win on Wednesday night. The Cardinals fell to 4-7 overall (1-2 Empire 8).

How it Happened

Fisher controlled the opening quarter, outshooting Brockport 5-0 and pressuring Golden Eagles goalkeeper Lauren Mastromarco throughout the period. The Cardinals broke through with just nine seconds left in the frame, when Mary Kate McPhee set up Gocella for the game's first goal.

The Cardinals earned four penalty corners in the second quarter but couldn't extend the lead. Less than a minute after a Fisher yellow card, Brockport's Alexis Penree evened the score off a feed from Kaitlyn Malinowski. About three and a half minutes later, shortly after a pair of Brockport penalty corners, Penelope Schalck scored what held up as the game-winner. Brockport's two goals came on its only two shots of the first half.

Fisher kept pushing after halftime, outshooting Brockport 7-4 over the final two quarters. McPhee hit the post with under six minutes to play, and the Cardinals followed with back-to-back penalty corners, but Brockport's Julia Nieboer turned away Gocella's attempt. Nieboer stopped McPhee again with two minutes left to seal the win, finishing with four saves in relief.

Game Notes

  • Gocella put all four of her shots on goal.

  • Fisher outshot Brockport 16-6, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal, and held a 6-5 advantage in penalty corners.
  • Morgan Parrinello played all 60 minutes in goal and made two saves.
