PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team has a light schedule this week, with just one game: a road trip to face Sage College in Troy, N.Y. on Saturday, Oct. 21.
The Cardinals, who are 4-4-5 overall and 3-0-3 in Empire 8 play, went 0-0-2 last week, drawing with conference foe Houghton before having a scoreless draw with Hartwick on Senior Day on Saturday. The team is third in the Empire 8 standings- if the season ended today, they would host No. 6 Houghton at Growney Stadium for the right to head to a semifinals against Elmira or Nazareth, who currently hold the top two spots in the conference.
However, the Cardinals can still improve that position in their final two games of the regular season, starting with the game in Troy on Saturday at 4:00 P.M.
Pair of Keepers: Fisher has largely split the goalkeeper position this season between senior
Jadon Schlierf and graduate student
Christian Burkhart. Schlierf has started nine games this season and gone 2-1-3, while Burkhart has started four while playing in an additional two. This past week, Burkhart made three saves in the 1-1 draw with Houghton, while Schlierf made a save in the Cardinals' scoreless draw with Hartwick.
The Gators of… Upstate New York: The Cardinals have gone 5-2 against the Sage Gators since 2005, including a 2-1 win at Growney Stadium last season behind scores by
Matt Gentile and
Parker Hotchkiss. Fisher has had less luck on the road against Sage, however, going 1-2 since 2005 in Troy.
Sage enters this weekend's game 1-3-2 in conference play and 3-6-4 overall, seventh in the conference and one spot behind Houghton for the sixth and final tournament-qualifying place.
Player to Watch: Sophomore
Reese Powers assisted in the lone goal of Fisher's 1-1 draw with Houghton last week. The Nunda native is currently tied for fifth in the Empire 8 for assists-per-game, with a .231 average.
