BRADFORD, PA – The St. John Fisher University wrestling team competed in a trimatch on Saturday night against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and Thiel College. The Cardinals had 11 athletes compete in this competition. With the results, Fisher now holds a 2-1 record.
St. John Fisher vs. Thiel College
Carl Santariello started the day by wrestling in the 125-weight class. He defeated his opponent by a 6-3 decision. In the 133 weight class, Derek Bernardino fell to his opponent by a major decision. Torin Biship battled in the 141-weight class, winning by a pin fall at the 4:12 minute mark. At 149, Mason Wersinger won 4-3, bringing the Cardinals lead to 12-4 with six more athletes to compete. Joshua Maslyn competed at 157, he won by a pin fall just 1:41 into the match. Logan Palmeri won his match up in the 165-weight class 7-4, giving Fisher a huge 21-4 lead. With four wrestlers left to compete, Zachary Miller in the 174, Nathan Coon in the 184, Jack Lestrange in the 197 and Luke Cawley in the 285 weight classes, Thiel won three out of four of them in pin fall and one match 12-0. This ultimately helped Thiel win by a score of 26-21 over the Cardinals.

In his second match of the day for the Cardinals, at 125 Santariello won 2-0. Bernardino at 133 won for Fisher bringing the score to 9-0. Zachary Ash competed at 141, winning by an injury default at the 6:01 minute mark. Wersinger competed in the 149 weight class defeating his opponent by a technical fall 3:05 into the match. At 157, Maslyn topped his opponent 5-3, bringing the Cardinals lead to 23-0. Palmeri at 165, Miller at 174, Coon at 185, Lestrange at 197 and Cawley at 285 all came short against their opponents. After ten match ups, the Cardinals came out on top by a score of 22-20.
Up next for the Cardinals is another road competition. They travel to Case Western Reserve University on Saturday Jan. 21st. The match is set to start at 11:00 am.
