PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's tennis team competed against SUNY Brockport on Friday for their season opener and were dominant. After losing the initial doubles match, the Cardinals won the next eight matches to defeat the Golden Eagles 8-1.
The duo of
Kathryn Strait and
Abby Garvey dropped the first duos match 8-4, but they were picked up by the next team of
Madison Galvin and
Eliana Kelly, who were victorious 8-4. The final duo was
Riley Ellis and
Tianna Buttino and the played a back and forth match that ended in an 8-7 win. Strait began the singles matches and despite going down 6-3 in the first set, she bounced back and won back-to-back sets for the victory.
The next five singles matches were dominant for the Cardinals, dropping just eight sets total. Garvey kicked it off with a 6-0 and 6-1 win in consecutive sets. Kelly followed with the same result. Galvin was victorious in her first set 6-0 as well and dropped two games in her second set.
Lilly Renzi secured her victory with 6-0, 6-4 set wins and
Grace Fisher was perfect in her sets, gong 6-0, 6-0 for her win.
Up next for the Fisher Tennis team is another home contest on September 9 at 4 p.m. They will host SUNY Geneseo.
