SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher College women's rowing team wrapped up its 2022 season competing in the Liberty League Conference Championship on Friday at the Fish Creek in Saratoga. The men's team was unable to field a crew due to illness and was forced to withdraw from the field.
The women's varsity 8 started off the day finishing fourth in its heat with a time of 8:14.44 behind Skidmore, University of Rochester and St. Lawrence.
Then in the petite final, the same crew finished second with a time of 8:20.725 behind Union.
The women's novice 4 came in sixth place behind Union, RIT, University of Rochester, William Smith and St. Lawrence with a time of 9:30.942.
Conditions for racing featured a nice sunny day with a gusty tailwind and increasing chop on the water through the course.
"The season ended with both of our boats having some of their best rowing of the year on Friday," added head coach
Jon Covney. "The varsity 8 is young, having no seniors, and had another race where they were able to line up at their conference championship with some of the best crews in the country. It was the first time the league has fielded eight boats so being able to race twice in a heat and final will help immensely with our experience going into next year."
Added Covney, "the novice 4 took their best strokes all season in their race. They were well within the pack going into the last quarter of the race, but the other crews had a little more in their tank and pulled ahead. Having the novices end on a high note is greatly beneficial as they will now add to our depth on the varsity squad. It was an excellent group of student athletes to work with and I'm excited to watch this team take the next step to hang with some of those nationally ranked teams in our conference."
