SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher College Men's and Women's rowing team competed in the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championship on Saturday at Fish Creek in Saratoga.
The Women's varsity 8 started off the day finishing fifth in its heat with a time of 7:58.986 behind Ithaca College, University of Rochester, Skidmore and Manhattan.
Then in the petite final, they finished third with a time of 8:04.141 behind Union and Manhattan and ahead of Nazareth for an overall finish of ninth place.
The women's novice 4 came in third place behind Union and Stony Brook with a time of 9:55.
The men's novice 4 also came in third in its flight behind Vassar and Union with a time of 8:40.205 that would've placed them sixth overall between the two flights.
Conditions for the Women's 8 and novice 4 featured a gusty tailwind and increasing chop on the water through the course. The Men's novice 4 flight was after lunch and the conditions were perfect as the wind dissipated making for glassy conditions.

"Overall results were okay," mentioned head coach
Jon Covney. "The Women's varsity 8 raced top level D3 teams and some D1 teams as well. Colgate, Marist, Canisius were in the other heat, so it was an opportunity to see how fast some of these teams in New York are. We are a young squad comparatively so while we may be taking our lumps now, in the long run it is going to help us get faster. Next week we are racing at the Liberty League Championship so we get to see many of the same crews again and hopefully build on our performance.
The women's novice 4 had limited time in a lineup due to various factors but their coxswain,
Katrina Wilbur, completed her first race and got them down the course. They'll be in a 4 again at the Liberty League Championship so hopefully they have a bit more confidence knowing they completed a race in a 4 so won't be as nervous.
The novice men's 4 battled in a tight race with Vassar and Union and are excited to have a rematch with Union at the Liberty League Championship and put a bow on their novice season.

For me, this regatta was 2 years in the making. A handful of coaches started meeting over zoom over the shutdowns due to covid and out of that grew the NYS Collegiate Rowing Assoc Board which I was elected to. The board has spent a lot of time organizing the regatta and it went off smoothly. I'm eager to see all of our crews hopefully put together their best row of the season on Friday back in Saratoga."
