ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College rowing squad was back in action today after a 539 day-long hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Cardinals hosted their river rivals Rochester and Nazareth in a three-team meet on the Genesee River on Saturday morning.
"We couldn't have asked for better conditions on the water today. Warm, sunny, with light wind and current," remarked head coach,
Jon Covney. "It was nice to be able to get together with the other crews that we share the river with and race for the first time since the fall of 2019."
Race-day jitters were high for the Cardinals as all but one rower on the women's boat are newcomers to the Fisher team. Their nerves put them at an early disadvantage, but the boat settled in and finished the race strong. The Cardinals ended up placing third in the friendly race, as the boat crossed the finish line of the 2000-meter race in 8:56.68.
Covney concluded, "Our rowers were happy for the opportunity to race and get the first competition behind them. The group is already looking forward to improving upon today's performance and preparing for the next race."
Fisher is due to hit the water next on Saturday, April 24 when they travel to Buffalo for a race hosted by D'Youville College.
