ITHACA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College rowing teams were back in action on Saturday as the Cardinals competed against Ithaca College on Cayuga Inlet.
In the first race of the day the Cardinals first Varsity 8 was paired with Ithaca College's third Varsity 8. Ithaca had a great start and got out to a boat length's lead through the first 1000 meters of the race. In the next 250 meters of the race, Fisher made a move and surged to cut Ithaca's lead to only two seats down. Fisher, continued its push to gain a lead of one seat going into the last 500m of the race and opened its lead up to a half of a boat through the finish line. The final time was Fisher 7:56.3 and Ithaca 7:58.8.
The next race was the Women's Novice 8, with the Cardinals' Men's Novice 4 joining in due to Ithaca's boat having to scratch due to injury. Both Ithaca and Fisher had a few athletes re-row from the first race so both schools could field full line-ups (due to injury/illness).
Ithaca's Novice 8 won with a time of 8:10.7, followed by Fisher's Men's novice 4, 8:47, and Novice 8, 8:54.6.
"We were grateful to be invited down to Ithaca to give our team another opportunity to race," commented head coach
Jon Covney. "Our varsity women had a phenomenal race with Ithaca. Our move that we made to go from almost a full boat down to even over the 3
rd 500 of the race was a great response. Ithaca is a strong, deep team and that race will help both squads as we get closer to our conference championships."
"Both novice boats put together their best rowing performances of the season so far," continued Covney." "Things are starting click a little bit more each and every practice so I was proud of the way they handled themselves. The women's team is getting healthier so I'm encouraged to have next weekend off and start our preparations for the last few weeks of the season."
