PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's field hockey team prepare for their final two games of the regular season this week. The Cardinals will play at the University of Rochester on Wednesday, Oct. 26 before heading to Utica for their final regular season game on Saturday, Oct. 29 in an Empire 8 matchup.
The Cardinals enter the week with a 7-9 overall record and are 6-2 in Empire 8 games. The Yellowjackets have gone 13-4 this season and are coming off a win over Union College in which they secured the Liberty League regular season title. Meanwhile, Utica has played to a 7-7 overall record, matching the Cardinals 6-2 record in the Empire 8. Their matchup will help decide the number two seed heading into the Empire 8 championship tournament.
Scouting the Rivals: Fisher has dropped three straight to the University of Rochester, including a 2-1 loss last season. After a scoreless first quarter, three corners in the span of four minutes would overwhelm
Sophia Trozzi in the 20
th minute, who turned away a shot before Rochester slapped it into the back corner of the goal. In the 40
th minute, now down 2-0,
Gianna Palma cut the deficit to one with a goal. In the loss, Trozzi finished with 10 saves over 60 minutes of play.
Looking to wrap the regular season with the second-best record in the conference, Fisher will challenge Utica. The Cardinals have topped the Pioneers in eight straight, dating back to 2015. These two teams squared off twice last season, as Fisher would win the regular season matchup 3-0 and the Empire 8 title 3-1. In the championship contest last season,
Audrey Grieb finished with four shots, Palma with three, and
Abby Richardson and
Molly Fisher tallied two shots apiece. Grieb was credited with two goals in the win, her fifth and sixth on the season.
Offensive Attack: Contributing to the success of the Cardinals this season has been their offensive success, which has seen them knock in the second most goals in the conference (56), and the third most in shots (16.81/game) and assists (2/game).
Palma ranks fourth in the conference in shots (3.44/game) and Fisher is tied for individual goals with (11). In the shots on goal category,
Emma Cooper's 33 ties her for sixth in the conference. Coming off a week that saw the Cardinals overpower their competitors with a +19 differential, Fisher will look to continue to find offensive success this week.
Player to Watch: The player to watch this week is
Anna Melfi. Melfi has accrued five shots over the last three games, scoring her fifth goal of the season in the 10-0 win over Russell Sage College. Melfi, who has appeared in 13 games, is fourth on the team in shot on goal percentage at .714.
