PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Riley Corey dusted the competition on Friday afternoon and the St. John Fisher College women's cross country team captured first place in its season debut as the Cardinals won the second annual Fisher-Rodenbeck Invitational with 17 points. Nazareth took second overall in the team standings with 41 points while Utica College rounded out the top three with 89 points.
Despite the wet and windy conditions, Fisher had a slew of personal bests on the day and had five runners finish inside the top 10.
Corey, who was named the Empire 8 Rookie of the Year following the 2019 cross country season, picked up where she left off after establishing a new personal record in the 4k after crossing the finish line nearly 10 seconds ahead of the runner-up with a winning mark of 15:44.0.
Laura Witt was second overall to finish with a time of 15:53.5 while
Morgan Gould smashed her personal best by nearly a minute after completing the event in third place at 16:14.5.
The Cardinals also claimed both fifth and sixth place with
Lauren DeMichele and
Chelsea Lamphere sprinting across the finish line in 16:21.4 and 16:27.8, respectively.
Junior
Alivia Collins finished just outside the top 10 in 11th place at 17:08.7 while
Angelea Collins was 16th overall at 17:31.3.
Fisher's quest for an Empire 8 Championship will continue at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 1st with one final tune-up at the Highlander Invite in Houghton.
