ALFRED, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's tennis team clinched a berth in the Empire 8 Conference Championship with its win over the Saxons of Alfred University, 5-4. The Cardinals advanced to 7-1 overall and moved to a solid 5-1 in the conference standings. Alfred dropped to 6-5 overall and fell to 4-2 in the conference.
Kaili Saffran kicked off the singles matches of the day with the first singles victory, 6-2 and 6-1.
The Cardinals, who earned five total match points on the day, would clinch in second singles after Cassidy Bell defeated her Saxon opponent in a three set battle.
Senior captain Caroline Seaberg also captured a victory in third singles with scores of 6-4 and 6-3 while Mikayla Santulli defeated her opponent in fourth singles, 6-3 and 6-2.
Zuzanna Pociecha capped off the Fisher wins with a victory in sixth singles with final scores of 6-4 and 6-2.
The Cardinals step back onto the court at 1 p.m. on Sunday as Fisher is slated to take on the Tigers of the Rochester Institute of Technology.
