Men's Soccer Battles For A 0-0 Draw With Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team drew a 0-0 tie in a non-conference bout with the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets (2-0-1) combined to outshoot the Cardinals (1-0-2) 19-5, but with solid defensive production and game saving stops from junior goalkeeper Joe Catalfamo, Fisher was able to battle for the draw.

In the first half of play, the Cardinals found themselves within scoring reach on two different occasions. Just shy of the 23rd minute, Justin Ferron received the ball in the box off a long throw in, firing a shot at the lower left corner but was stopped by the Yellow Jackets' goalkeeper.

Fisher had its best chance at scoring with seven and a half minutes remaining in the first 45 minutes of play. As a result of a collision in the box, Matt Soos was able to gather the ball and blast it just high and wide of the net.

Despite Rochester generating six shots and two corner kick attempts, Fisher was able to hold its own, going into a 0-0 draw at the half. Ferron led the first half with two shots, while Soos and Matthew Kaiser also tallied one of their own.

The Yellow Jackets dominated the second half of play, outshooting the Cardinals 11-1 and creating five corner kick attempts. However, outstanding play from the defense and Catalfamo kept Fisher in the game. Tyler Randall took the lone Fisher shot attempt in the second half.

After back and forth action, with zero shot attempts in the first overtime, Rochester blasted a rocket of a shot in the 104th minute. Catalfamo would make an outstanding, diving save to keep his team in the game. Less than two minutes later, Rochester would have its final scoring opportunity but Catalfamo would maintain the shutout, making his final save of the night.

Catalfamo tallied five total saves in 110 minutes of play for the Cardinals.

Fisher returns to the pitch at 3 p.m. on Saturday to face Sarah Lawrence College in the Maritime Soccer Classic.
