SALEM, V.A. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team fell to Lynchburg College 3-1 in its second game of the Roanoke Invitational. With the loss, the Cardinals fell to 0-2-0 while Lynchburg moves to 2-0-0 in the early part of the season.
Lynchburg wasted no time punching its first goal in the eighth minute of the contest. Fisher would pick its defense up, only allowing two shots after the goal. The Hornets accumulated four total shots, to Fisher's two at the completion of the half. The Cardinals' Logan Chase and Emily Murray each blasted a shot of their own.
In the second half, Lynchburg buried a one timer on a cross for its second goal. The Hornets continued to fire shots, with Melissa McGowan tallying three saves in less than four minutes.
However, Lynchburg found a ball on a breakaway, putting the Hornets up 3-0 with 22:34 left on the clock. In the 77th minute, the Cardinals took advantage of a missed clearance when Emily Murray chipped a ball up over the keeper, cutting the margin to two.
Fisher would not take advantage of its lone scoring opportunity on a corner kick from Elise Olivo with 9:15 remaining. Lynchburg would go on to take its second win of the season, registering three goals on ten shots.
Overall, Fisher was credited with three shots, with Murray leading the way with two and scoring Fisher's lone goal. Chase would take credit for the third shot.
Melissa McGowan would finish the match with three saves over 90 total minutes of play.
Fisher returns to the pitch at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday against the Golden Eagles of The College at Brockport at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field.
