Women's Soccer Continues To Roll, Downs Houghton 2-1

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher women's soccer team scored twice in less than a minute early in the second half and held on the rest of the way for a 2-1 road victory over Houghton on Wednesday night.

The Cardinals pushed their winning streak to nine matches and improved to 12-1 overall and 8-0 in the Empire 8 Conference. Houghton dropped to 8-5-1 and 5-2-1, respectively.

How It Happened

Houghton took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute on an unassisted tally from Hope Russell and held on to that advantage until the 57:52 mark, when St. John Fisher junior forward Olivia Kalil evened the score with her eighth goal of the year.

Less than a minute later, Kalil recorded the assist on junior forward Emily Woolingham's team-leading 11th goal of the season, which proved to be the game-winner.

The game featured few offensive chances as the teams combined for 11 total shots and eight shots on goal. St. John Fisher sophomore goalkeeper Isabella Ayers made three saves in the contest.

Game Notes

  • The Cardinals have won 15 consecutive games against Empire 8 opponents – including regular season and postseason matches – since last October. Fisher has beaten Houghton three times in that stretch.

  • Woolingham has scored a goal in three straight contests.

  • Woolingham has tallied a point in all but two of the Cardinals' games this season.

  • Woolingham has scored in all but four of Fisher's 13 matches.

  • Kalil has scored in the last two games and in five of the Cardinals' last seven overall.
