PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's tennis team finished out its regular season schedule with a 5-4 victory over Oswego State. Fisher finishes the season with its most regular season wins since 2006, compiling a record of 9-2 on the year. Oswego finishes out the year with an overall record of 3-7.
Oswego took two of the three doubles matches, with Fisher's only win coming in second doubles. Sarah Sorrentino and Amanda Pendergast shut out their opponent, 8-0.
Kaili Saffran took the first singles match of the day, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Taylor Slink then dropped second singles in hard fought battles with scores of, 6-4, 7-5.
The Cardinals then picked up third and fourth singles wins, with fourth singles being the deciding match in the contest. Sorrentino swept her opponent, 6-1, 6-0. Cassidy Bell followed that up with a thrilling fourth singles win, going three sets with scores of 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
Pendergast then fell in close sets with her Laker opponent in fifth singles, 7-5, 6-3. Caroline Seaberg finished out the day with a sixth singles sweep 6-2, 6-4.
The Cardinals are slated to host the Empire 8 Conference Tennis Championship, beginning with Fisher taking on the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks at 4 p.m. on Friday at Mendon Racquet Club. Top ranked Nazareth is set to take on Houghton College at 4 p.m. as well. The winners of the semi-final matches will duel it out at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning for the Empire 8 title.
