Baseball Wins Two In Winter Haven

The St. John Fisher College baseball team picked up two wins Monday, including a come-from behind 8-7 victory over Eastern Mennonite University in its second game.  The Cardinals defeated Gwynedd Mercy 8-5 in its opening game at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida.

Game 1 - Fisher 8, Gwynedd Mercy 5

Just as it did the previous day against Chicago-Concordia, the Fisher bats started hot scoring three runs in the first inning.  Cody Wiktorkski tripled to score Mike RomanShane Barley hit Wiktorski in the very next batter.  Later in the inning the Cardinals scored an unconventional run as Malcolm Kelsey stole second and Barley stole home.

Fisher scored another run in the fourth off an RBI single from Frank Carnevale to take a 4-1 lead.

The Griffins cut the Fisher lead to 4-3 after a two-run 7th inning, however, the Cardinals were able to pull away in the top of the eighth, scoring three runs.  

Fisher scored all three runs with two outs, starting with freshman Scott Eisenmenger picking up his first collegiate RBI.  Calvin Woolhiser came up big as the next batter with a two RBI double.

Wiktorski homered in the ninth for the final run of the game.

Terry Engels picked up the win for Fisher, pitching five innings and surrendering two runs.  Ethan Hite and Kevin Berge each pitched two innings in relief.

Game 2 - Fisher 8, Eastern Mennonite 

Fisher scored a run apiece in the first two innings, including Carnevale with a solo shot in the second to push Fisher's lead to 2-0.

After exchanging runs in the fourth inning, the Royals notched three in the fifth to go ahead 4-3.  

Trailing 6-4 in the eighth, the Cardinals erupted for four runs to take control of the game.  With bases loaded, Jack Trotman hit an RBI single to score Malcolm Kelsey.   Nate Roethel put Fisher ahead for good with a single to score Cam Allen and Carnevale.  

Eastern Mennonite threatened in the ninth after scoring a run, but Berge was able to get out of the jam to earn the save.

Colton Fergus earned the win for Fisher to improve to 1-0 on the season.

Fisher is back in action tomorrow at 3 p.m. against Wartburg College at Lake Myrtle Complex in Auberndale.
