Field Hockey Tops Ithaca 2-1

Senior Alexis Zakala scored the game-winning goal with less than 100 seconds remaining to lift the St. John Fisher College field hockey program to a 2-1 victory over visiting Ithaca College on Saturday morning.  With the win, Fisher improves to 2-0 in the Empire 8 Conference and 5-2 overall.  It is the best start to a season in Fisher's four-year history.

It was a tale of two halves, with Fisher dominating in the first and Ithaca controlling most of t he second.  The Bombers outshot the Cardinals 20-16 for the game, including a 12-9 edge over the final 35 minutes.

Freshman Emily Markarian opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, following through on a ricocheted shot to notch her sixth goal of the season. The forward along, with Elizabeth Cusack, lead the team in goals with six.  

The Bombers got off to a quick start in the second half. Fisher's Cusack received a green card in the 51st minute, giving the Bombers an advantage. During the penalty, Ithaca's Taylor O'Neil found the back of the cage to tie the game at 1-1.

With less than two minutes remaining, Fisher capitalized on its fifth and final penalty-corner of the game, as Zakala knocked in a loose ball from five yards out to put the Cardinals up for good.

Goalkeeper Danielle Famolaro made numerous key saves, totaling 11 throughout the full 70 minutes.

The Cardinals host Hartwick College at 5 p.m. next Saturday at Growney Stadium.
