The St. John Fisher College field hockey team fell 3-1 to host Utica College on Saturday as the two squads battled it out for the No. 1 seed in the Empire 8 Championship.

Emily Markarian put the Cardinals on the board in the 25th minute. The freshman scored the lone goal for Fisher by sliding the ball under diving goalkeeper Kells Casey.

Utica's Hannah Mackey responded just five minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. She tallied the eventual game-winner in the 41st minute for her 34th goal of the season. Chasity Eckert rounded out the scoring for Utica at the 50-minute mark.

At the end of the 70 minutes, the Pioneers held a 19-6 shot advantage over the Cardinals.

The Empire 8 Championship is set to begin Saturday with No. 2 Fisher taking on No. 3 Washington & Jefferson at 2 p.m.

The Cardinals wrap up their regular season at 2 p.m. Sunday when they take on the visiting Skidmore College Thoroughbreds.
