BOX SCORE
The St. John Fisher College field hockey team scored two goals in the second half and improved to 1-0 in the Empire 8 Conference with a 2-1 win at Houghton College on Wednesday evening. With the win, Fisher improves to 3-3 overall on the year.
Tonight's win is another step in the right direction for the field hockey program, competing in just its third season as an NCAA Division III program. In 2011, Houghton defeated Fisher 5-0, and last season, the Highlanders won 6-0 over the host Cardinals.
Fisher never trailed in the game and after a scoreless first half, freshman
Bailee Barrett gave the Cardinals the lead for good in the 40th minute with her third goal of the year.
Nearly 20 minutes later, sophomore
Elizabeth Cusack tallied her third goal of the season to put the Cardinals up 2-0. Houghton (1-5) scored with just under four minutes left and had two penalty corners in the closing moments, but was unable to get a shot off in the closing moments.
Sophomore goalie
Danielle Famolaro stopped five shots to earn her third win of the year.
Fisher will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday and will host Utica College. The Pioneers are the defending Empire 8 Conference champions and knocked off Fisher in last Empire 8 Championship semifinals.
