The St. John Fisher College field hockey team used three second half goals to defeat visiting Saint Lawrence University 4-2 Saturday at Growney stadium in the Cardinals final regular season game.
With the win, Fisher, competing in just its third season as an NCAA Division III program continues to increase the College-record for wins in a season. The Cardinals now sit at 9-9 overall.
With the score tied at one following the first half Fisher scored back-to-back goals just over one minute apart to take a 3-1 lead.
Elizabeth Cusack started the run for the Cardinals six minutes into the half, on an assist from
Bailee Barrett.
Shortly after,
Marissa Vedella netted an unassisted goal for her second goal of the game to give Fisher the 3-1 lead.
Less than five minutes later the Cardinals found the back of the net again as
Caitlin Allen fed
Stacie Skidmore for the insurance goal.
The Saints scored late in the game to cut the lead to 4-2 but could not muster a comeback.
Vedella started off the scoring for Fisher 16 minutes into the first half, with the assist credited to
Alexandrea Malley. The junior now has seven goals on the season.
Danielle Famolaro made four saves in net for the Cardinals.
Fisher has clinched a spot in the Empire 8 Championships next weekend held at Stevens Institute. The Cardinals will take on the top-seeded Ducks with action scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
