Men's Soccer Earns Draw Against Nationally Ranked Saints

BOX SCORE

The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team had an impressive defensive showing against 19th ranked Saint Lawrence University, earning a 0-0 tie Tuesday at Growney stadium.

With the tie Fisher moves to 3-6-2 overall and Saint Lawrence improves to 7-1-2.

The Saints created the majority of opportunities throughout the game, outshooting the Cardinals 21-7 but a cohesive defensive unit and strong play by goalkeeper Kyle Metcalfe helped keep a blank slate.

Despite being outshot 8-2 in the first half, Fisher had the best scoring opportunity in the 28th minute of play.  Danny Yancone found the head of Joel Castellini on a cross from the right flank which he sent off the crossbar.

The second half was a defensive struggle throughout with just six total shots between both teams.  Kyle Metcalfe had back-to-back saves midway through the half stopping an initial St. Lawrence corner kick, then saving the second shot attempt.

The Saints generated several opportunities in both overtime periods.  In the first overtime Shane Breznak chased down a streaking St. Lawrence attacker going in on goal with a slide tackle to crush the opportunity.  St. Lawrence finished both overtimes with an 8-1 shot advantage.

Kyle Metcalfe made 8 saves in net for the Cardinals, earning his fourth shutout of the year.

Fisher will return to action at 3 p.m on Saturday when it hosts Alfred University.
