The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team saved its best for last, defeating nationally-ranked Ithaca College 2-1 on Wednesday in the second overtime period to clinch the final spot in the upcoming Empire 8 Championship. The win against No. 5 Ithaca is the highest-ranked team that Fisher has ever defeated in program history.
Fisher earned the No. 4 seed with the win and will travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on the top-seeded Bombers on Saturday, November 9 (Time TBA) in a rematch of Wednesday's thriller.
The game-winning goal came in the 106
th minute as
Taryn Guinta scored her third goal of the season. Ithaca had an opportunity to cap the win as the second overtime got underway, but the shot sailed wide, giving Fisher another chance to pull off the upset.
After a scoreless first half of play, Ithaca would break the scoreless tie in the 57
th minute as Taylor Baranowsky launched a ball past
Brooke Seavitt for the 1-0 advantage.
The lead wouldn't last for long though.
Chelsea Oberkrieser found a cutting
Hannah Gilbride who evened the score at 1-1 as she blasted the ball into the back of the net.
Neither team was able to gain an advantage as the half wore on. Extra time would be needed to decide the winner, setting the stage for Guinta's heroics in the come from behind win.
The Cardinals accounted for 15 shots in the win with five coming off the foot of Guinta.
Alexandra Rohloff managed three shots, while
Laura Burgstrom tallied two.
Seavitt earned the win after making three saves in net for Fisher.
