The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team had its third overtime game of the season, coming out victorious over the host Utica Pioneers on Saturday. The Cardinals defeated Utica 2-1, with a goal by
Jake Quattrini just 25 seconds into the extra period.
With the win, Fisher improves to 5-2-1 on the year and 1-0-1 in the Empire 8. Utica falls to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Off an assist from
Garhett Varin, Quattrini fired a shot low and to the right side, beating Pioneer goalkeeper Anthony Caruso. Varin has now assisted on both of the Cardinals' overtime game-winners this year.
After a scoreless first half, Varin scored the first goal of the game when he chipped the ball over Caruso from about 10 yards out.
Austin Buckley sent a long ball to Varin and was credited with the assist on the 52nd minute goal.
Utica answered six minutes later when Greg Silvestro powered a header into the Fisher goal off a corner kick from Jeffrey Cupka. But, the two teams couldn't find the goal in the final half hour, as the game was sent into extra time tied 1-1.
Kyle Metcalfe picked up his fourth win of the year, making six saves in the effort.
The Cardinals will return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when they host University of Rochester
