Castellini and Crew Overpower the Spartans

BOX SCORE

The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team improved 4-2-1 on Wednesday night at Growney Stadium with a 5-1 win over D'Youville College. The Spartans fall to 1-6 on the season.

In the opening period, Fisher notched three goals on the Spartans, including two from Joel Castellini. Before Castellini got to work, last year's leading scorer for the Cardinals, Garhett Varin, got on the board first as he knocked in a pass from John Crean in the 18th minute.

Castellini scored his first goal in the 31st minute, when Austin Buckley rocketed a pass through the box from the top right corner, allowing the senior to put a goal past the keeper. Exactly two minutes later, Castellini was at it again, as Alex Stryker chased down a long outlet pass and sent a beautiful touch across to his teammate for Castellini's second score.

The Spartans tried to push back in the second half, taking nine shots in the period, seven more than they did in the first, including a goal in the 51st minute.

Fisher could not be contained, however, as Castellini added an assist to his day, sending a ball into the box in the 82nd minute that found Jake Quattrini, who headed the goal home. Just under a minute later the Cardinals tacked on its fifth and final goal, this one coming off a direct kick from Kris Toscano that Austin Buckley settled and pushed past the keeper.

The Cardinals will return to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday as they travel to Utica College for an Empire 8 Conference matchup.
