The St. John Fisher College field hockey program earned its first-ever Empire 8 Conference win on Saturday, as the Cardinals pulled away for a 4-0 win over visiting Elmira College at Fisher's Growney Stadium.
With the win, Fisher improves to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the Empire 8 Conference. Fisher, playing in just its second season as an NCAA Division III program, has already matched its inaugural season win-total.
Fisher jumped out to a 1-0 lead as sophomore
Marissa Vedella scored the eventual game-winning goal just over five minutes into the game. Vedella collected a blocked shot and drove the ball into the back of the cage for her second goal of the season.
The Cardinals pulled away with two goals in a 4:17 span midway through the second half.
Kailen Maynard scored at the 51:49 mark to put Fisher up 2-0 and Vedella scored her second of the game after teammate
Caitlin Allen was denied on the breakaway.

Elizabeth Cusack sealed the win with her third goal of the year with 2:12 left.

Danielle Famolaro was stellar in goal yet again. The reigning Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week stopped nine shots to earn her second shutout of the season.
Fisher finished the game with 21-18 advantage in shots.
The Cardinals will return to action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and will host Wells College. It will be the final contest in a six-game homestand.
