Field Hockey Falls to Houghton in First Empire 8 Game

Box Score

The St. John Fisher College field hockey team lost to the visiting Houghton College Highlanders, 5-0, in its 2012 Empire 8 Conference opener.  The loss drops Fisher to 1-5 on the season and 0-1 in the conference, while Houghton improves to 2-1 and 1-1 in Empire 8 play.

Colleen Sullivan scored her first goal of the day, the only the Highlanders would need, 7:24 into the game after finding the ball in a skirmish in front of the goal.  Houghton made it a two-goal difference just over three minutes later when Jenna Newcombe, who assisted on the first goal, tipped-in a shot from Sullivan.

Highlander's leading scorer Ashley Engle added her fourth goal of the season to make the game 3-0 when she blasted a shot off a penalty corner and through the legs of Fisher goalkeeper Danielle Famolaro.

After taking the three-goal lead into halftime, the Highlanders scored two more over the next 35 minutes for the 5-0 victory. Sullivan added her second goal of the day before Tatum McLeod scored on a designed tip-in play with the assist going to Newcombe.

Noelle Knox led the Cardinals with two shots, while Famolaro came up with seven stops in the net.

Fisher will continue Empire 8 play this weekend when it hosts Elmira College at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
