Fisher Falls to Hobart in Waning Seconds of Overtime

BOX SCORE

The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team lost 2-1 to Hobart College in the final moments of overtime on Monday night at Growney Stadium. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 2-2 on the season while the Statesmen improve to 2-1.

In the 119th minute, Caetano Sanchez had a great opportunity on a header that Fisher goalie Kyle Metcalfe turned away with a punch over the crossbar. The save out-of-bounds led to a Hobart corner kick with time dwindling, and after the initial corner was denied, both teams fought with the ball back and forth before Alex Kittelberger was able to send a shot to the back of the net with just 3.1 seconds remaining in the game for the win.

Despite Hobart outshooting Fisher 5-2 in the first half, the Cardinals led the Statesmen 1-0 at the half off of a Hobart own goal. The goal came in the 16th minute when the ball spun backwards and into the Hobart net on a clear attempt by a Statesmen defender.

Sanchez had another shot that was saved by Metcalfe in the 54th minute, and this time Jacob Fox collected the rebound and scored an unassisted goal to knot the game at 1-1.

Jake Quattrini and Garhett Varin led the Cardinals with two shots apiece. Quattrini had one of Fisher's best opportunities to score in just the fifth minute of action, ripping a shot from just inside the box that Hobart keeper Mike Lucas had to turn away.

Metcalfe was solid in goal all night for the Cardinals, stopping eight shots throughout the 120 minutes.

The Cardinals will be back in action at 1 p.m. this Saturday when they host Ithaca College at Growney Stadium.
