BOX SCORE
The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team advanced to the finals of the 2012 ECAC Upstate Championship on Saturday. The Cardinals (8-7-5) tied Hartwick College (8-8-2) 1-1, but advanced to the finals by converting on all five penalty kicks in the shootout.
Four of Hartwick's five shooters were able to convert, but Fisher's
Sydney DeVitto made a diving save to her right on the second shooter to give the Cardinals the advantage.
Fisher sealed the deal on
Kaytlyn Perotti's penalty kick. The shot banged off the left post and rolled across the goal line before spinning in.
Fisher was just over three minutes away from winning the game in regulation. The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead on
Heather Konieczny's fifth goal of the year in the 12
th minute of regulation. It would stay that way for most of the game, but Hartwick's Francis Nesi knocked the ball into the back of the net following a scramble in the goal crease after a corner with 3:07 left to play to force extra time.
DeVitto made two saves for Fisher.
Vicki Alfieri,
Hannah Gilbride,
Caitlin Cottone,
Alexandra Rohloff and Perotti each scored on their penalty kicks in the shootout.
Fisher will return to action at 2 p.m. on Sunday and will face the winner of today's other semifinal match between The College at Brockport and Cazenovia College.
