Field Hockey Falls to Stevens Despite Outstanding Defensive Effort

BOX SCORE

The St. John Fisher College field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to the visiting Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks in a Sunday afternoon Empire 8 contest at Growney Stadium. With the loss, Fisher is now 5-8 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while Stevens is 8-5, 5-0.

Stevens scored its two goals in the opening six minutes, notching its first goal on a redirected shot from Marguerite Chavez off a pass from Mary Nikish at 3:29. A few moments later, Jill Fiebel scored the Ducks second at 5:40 after settling a ball in front of the goal after Cardinals' goalie Danielle Famolaro saved the first Stevens attempt.

The Cardinals received great play from its defense and goalie all afternoon. Fisher warded off 24 shots by Stevens on the day, with Danielle Famolaro stopping 12 attempts, including a split kick save in the second half on a fired shot from the top of the arc. Alexis Zakala and Stacie Skidmore also added to the effort, recording a defensive save apiece, each that would have led to Stevens' third score.

Marissa Vedella led the Cardinals with two shots-on-goal, while Elizabeth Cusack and Zakala both added a shot-on-goal.

Fisher will return to action at 11 a.m. next Saturday when it travels to Utica College for an Empire 8 contest.
