Men's Soccer Battles but Falls to U of R

The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team lost 2-0 to the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Tuesday night. With the loss the Cardinals fall to 3-6 on the season.

The Yellowjackets came out firing in the second half, taking two corners and putting several other shots right on the doorstep for Kyle Metcalfe and the Cardinals, but Fisher withstood the attack. Fisher snuck a ball past the pressure and Austin Buckley tapped the ball past the keeper, but the Rochester defender stayed close and would not let Buckley settle the ball for a shot.

The 61st minute saw Matt Silvi make a great attempt at scoring, sending a shot that had the goalie watching to see whether it would clear the crossbar, which it did on the high side.

A few minutes later, in the 44th minute, freshman Jarvis D'Souza sent a cross to Tom Sorrentino for a header in the upper left 90 past Metcalfe. Rochester added an insurance goal in the 84th minute when Andrew Sheridan sent a cross in from just inside the 30-yard line for a header by Max Fan that found the net in nearly the same spot as the first score.

In a scoreless first half, Fisher was on the attack, out-shooting the Yellowjackets 5-4 in the stanza. Although both teams recorded just one shot on goal, Fisher attempted two more corner kicks than Rochester (3-1). Right before the half, Connor Julien rifled a shot to the left side of the goal, forcing the Rochester keeper to dive, but the shot missed just wide.

Fisher will return to action on Saturday at 12 p.m. when it travels to Elmira to take on the Soaring Eagles.
