Men's Soccer Concludes Season with 3-2 Loss to Alfred

The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team concluded its 2011 season with a 3-2 loss to the visiting Alfred University Saxons on Senior Day at Growney Stadium.  With the loss, Fisher finishes its season with a 3-10-3 record and a 1-4-1 mark in the Empire 8.

Chris Maxwell gave Fisher the early lead, scoring 33 seconds into the contest.  The senior, playing in his final game, one-timed a shot off of a pass from Austin Buckley to put the Cardinals ahead.

Alfred, however, scored two goals in a 75-second span midway through the first half, to take a 2-1 lead and added another goal in the 36th minute to take a 3-1 lead into the half.

Fisher would look to rally, and added a second goal, this one from Garhett Varin to make the score 3-2.  In the 73rd minute, Varin took a ball on the breakaway, but made his first touch too hard.  Alfred keeper Elliot Thorpe came out to clear the ball, but his boot hit Varin and deflected straight into the Saxon goal.

Late in the half, Fisher had a chance to even the score on a penalty kick, but Fisher shooter Sean Fishel was denied by Thorpe.  Jesse Marano was on the near post for a follow-up shot, but Thorpe recovered in time to make the back-to-back saves.

Jake Backscheider led the Cardinals with four shots, while Kyle Metcalfe made two saves for Fisher in the defeat.
