Field Hockey Finishes Inaugural Season With Loss to Utica

The St. John Fisher College field hockey team rounded out its inaugural season with a 2-0 loss against visiting Utica College under the lights tonight at Growney Stadium.  With the loss, Fisher finishes 2-15 in its first season of competition.

Utica, who clinched the top spot in the Empire 8 Conference with tonight's win, is the eighth team that Fisher held under two goals this season.  The Pioneers also the former team of Fisher head coach Tarah Christenson, as she served as their head coach from 2007-2008.

Prior to this evening's game, Fisher's two seniors, Rachel James and Danielle Riolo were recognized for their dedication and hard work in founding the program.

Fisher came out with determination to finish the season on a high note. The Cardinals hunkered down defensively batting away eleven shots during the first 28 minutes as keeper Kellie Redmond deflected a high shot off the left hand blocker.

During the 29th minute, Utica found the back of the cage as Mallory Marinao passed to Louise Steele-Norton for the first goal of the game.

In the second half, Utica came out firing with 19 total shots and finally added an insurance goal during the 65th minute as Steele-Norton chipped in her second goal of the night.  The goal came off a rebound to make it the eventual score of 2-0.

Redmond made 10 saves tonight, as teammates Taylor Parker and Jordan Perna each had two shots to wrap up the season.

Fisher finishes its first season of play with both Marissa Vedella and Caitlin Allen leading the goal column with five total.  Parker also tied the two with three assists on the season.  Redmond played every second of the season between the pipes, and finished her first career year with a .696 save percentage and 135 total stops.
