Field Hockey Rallies But Falls Short To Nazareth

The St. John Fisher College field hockey team lost a 4-3 nail biter to Nazareth College today at Growney Stadium.  With the loss, Fisher falls to 1-14 on the season and 0-6 in the Empire 8.

Stacie Skidmore capped off a three-goal Fisher comeback after scoring midway through the second half to even the game at 3-3.  Skidmore capitalized on a large rebound from Nazareth goaltender Shannon Winney, which she was able to fire in from close range.

Despite the rally, the Golden Flyers were able to take their lead back, on a give-and-go play between Alexis Root and Tessa Knapp.  Root passed the ball to Knapp, who fed it back for an uncontested goal in front of the cage. The goal came with just over five minutes to play in the game.

Nazareth started the game quickly, scoring its first goal just 21 seconds into the contest.  Off of the opening whistle, the Golden Flyers carried the ball downfield, ending with a Nina Fargnoli score.

The visitors added two more goals in the first half, from Maria Martini and Kailee O'Hara, to take a 3-0 lead into the second stanza of play.

But the Cardinals didn't let the deficit deter them, and Marissa Vedella cut the Nazareth lead to two just 3:51 into the half.
Caitlin Allen added the second Cardinal goal of the day, drilling a ball under the leg of a sliding Winney. The goal came off of a Vedella corner, with the primary assist going to Taylor Parker.

Vedella led the Cardinals with five shots, while she and Allen both scored two points on one goal and one assist.
Kellie Redmond finished with nine saves, while Winney added four for Nazareth.  Sophia Rhodes, who came in for relief after Fisher's third goal, did not face a shot from the Cardinals.

Fisher will return to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday when it faces off against Morrisville College at Growney Stadium.
