McPhee Scores Late, Field Hockey Falls on Senior Day

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Senior Mary Kate McPhee tied her career high with her 11th goal of the season on Senior Day, but Hartwick scored twice in the third quarter and answered McPhee's fourth-quarter goal 64 seconds later to beat the St. John Fisher field hockey team 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Growney Stadium. The Cardinals head into their last regular season contest 7-9 overall and 4-4 in Empire 8 play.

Before the contest the Cardinals Athletic Department and Cardinal Field Hockey program thanked the seniors of the program for all of their hard work, dedication and commitment to the university, the athletic department and the program. The seniors honored were Mary Kate McPhee, Lauren Fracy and Caitlyn Mahoney.

How It Happened

Hartwick pushed early, earning four penalty corners in the first quarter. Junior goalkeeper Morgan Parrinello turned away all four shots she faced in the frame, and Jordan Kauffman added a defensive save on a Makayla Bales attempt in the final minute. Fisher held Hartwick without a shot in the second quarter, and the game went to halftime scoreless.

The Hawks broke through 5:31 into the third when Lexi Cheeseman scored on her only shot of the day. Katelyn Klotz converted a penalty stroke just over four minutes later to make it 2-0.

The Cardinals cut into the deficit midway through the fourth. Hartwick goalkeeper Ava Reynolds stopped McPhee on a penalty corner, but Fisher earned another corner seconds later and McPhee finished a feed from freshman Makayla Vanderpool 6:24 into the quarter to make it 2-1.

Hartwick answered right away. Klotz scored her second goal of the day off a corner, with Hope Angioletti assisting, to restore the two-goal lead with 7:32 remaining. Reynolds denied McPhee again with three minutes to play.

Hartwick outshot Fisher 14-9, held a 12-6 edge in shots on goal and earned 11 penalty corners to the Cardinals' six.

Game Notes

  • McPhee's goal was her 11th of the season, matching the career high she set as a junior last season. She leads Fisher in goals (11), points (26), shots (81) and shots on goal (52).
  • McPhee now has 92 career points. She ranks sixth in program history in points, six behind Elizabeth Cusack (98) for fifth.
  • Vanderpool has points in back-to-back games after scoring at Utica on Wednesday. Both of her assists this season have set up McPhee goals.
  • The Cardinals have scored 12 of their 40 goals this season in the fourth quarter, their most in any period.
  • St. John Fisher will be on the road for an Empire 8 Field Hockey Tournament first round game on Oct. 31 as either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed.
