Baseball Sweeps Utica

Jon Gibbs hit his sixth home run and drove in four of Fisher's five runs in the first game.
The St. John Fisher College baseball team improved to 26-11 overall and 11-3 in the Empire 8 with two wins over Utica College on Sunday.

Game One - Fisher 5, Utica 1

Jon Gibbs led the Cardinals, going 2-for-2 from the plate with a double and two-run homerun. The senior finished the day with four RBI and a run scored. Freshman Ben Bostick also had two hits on the day, including his fifth triple of the season, finishing with two runs scored and a RBI. Marc Montesano and Phil Pettinella each had a hit in the game.

Mike Craig got the start and continued his perfect season on the mound, moving to 3-0 with a complete game effort. Once again the senior scattered multiple hits (7) but only surrendered one earned run while striking out seven.

Game Two - Fisher 5, Utica 4

Fisher squeaked out a one-run victory in a comeback effort to sweep the weekend from Utica. After giving up two runs in the fourth inning, the Cardinals had a burst of four runs in the fifth to take control of the game. They added an insurance run in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead and held on with closer Geoff Martone earning his fifth save of the season.

Adam Pettinella received the start and improved to 3-1 on the season, lasting 4 1/3 innings while giving up three earned runs. The freshman fanned five Pioneer batters.

Bostick led Fisher with two RBI on one hit while Matt Klock had two hits, scoring a run and driving another in. Montesano added a hit and crossed the plate once while Sean Osterman scored twice.

The Cardinals will return to action on Tuesday when they travel for a 3 p.m. start versus Medaille College.
